Their simple anatomy makes mushroom corals remarkably resilient, which is one reason they have become one of the most popular beginner corals in the reef aquarium hobby. Mushroom corals often grow relatively fast, which is another reason hobbyists enjoy propagating and fragging them.

Healthy corals recover significantly faster than stressed corals. Fortunately, mushroom corals are generally one of the more resilient coral families, so success is possible even if mistakes are made.
Before making your first cut, gather everything you'll need so the coral spends as little time outside the aquarium as possible.
Recommended equipment includes:
Sharp scalpel or scissors
Bone cutters (if fragging on rock)
Container filled with aquarium water
Gloves
Paper towels
Coral glue (if mounting immediately)
Frag plugs or frag discs
Eye glasses (recommended because of risk of palytoxin exposure)
Having your workspace prepared before removing the coral makes the entire process much smoother and helps reduce stress on the coral.
Before removing the coral to begin the process, turn off circulation pumps and wavemakers to prevent freshly cut tissue from blowing around the aquarium after reintroduction.
Prepare a shallow container using water from your display tank. This allows you to perform the fragging process without exposing the coral to unnecessary temperature or salinity changes.
Lay out all of your tools ahead of time so you're not searching for supplies while the coral is out of the tank.
Although mushroom corals tolerate air exposure reasonably well, minimizing time outside the aquarium is still good practice.
Whenever possible, it's easier to frag mushroom corals after removing the rock they're attached to. However, this isn't always practical.
If the colony is attached to a large aquascape structure, attempting to pull the mushroom free can cause more damage than simply cutting it in place. In many cases, removing a small section of surrounding rock with bone cutters is safer than peeling the mushroom from its attachment point.
If the colony cannot be removed from the aquarium without dismantling your aquascape, don't force it. Many experienced reef hobbyists simply place a shallow container beneath the coral, make the cuts while the colony remains attached, and allow the fragments to fall directly into aquarium water. This minimizes handling and often causes less overall stress than attempting to peel the mushroom from the frag rock.
If you choose this method, take your time and keep the blade movements controlled. Mushroom tissue is surprisingly forgiving, but clean cuts are still far preferable to tearing or stretching the coral.
The goal is to divide the coral into healthy pieces while ensuring each fragment contains enough tissue to recover. Also bear in mind that larger coral frags generally recover more quickly than smaller frags, so a conservative approach to fragging usually produces better long-term polyp yields than an aggressive fragging approach.
As mentioned previously, the simplest method for fragging most mushroom corals is cutting directly through the center of the oral disc, including the mouth.

As long as each fragment contains a portion of the mouth and surrounding tissue, new mushrooms can typically regenerate.
Use a sharp blade and make clean cuts rather than sawing through the tissue. Fragging scissors can be used effectively for mushroom corals not strongly attached to a substrate, but the blades must be sharp and thin to minimize tissue stress. Dull blades crush tissue, increasing recovery time and the likelihood of infection.
Unlike stony corals, mushroom corals can be difficult to glue immediately after fragging because of their slimy surface and tendency to detach before healing.
Several mounting methods work well:
Place the frags inside a small mesh container with pieces of rubble or frag plugs. After attaching naturally, they can be permanently mounted. This method works well for minimizing damage, but is not always practical for larger colonies that produce many frags.
Some reef hobbyists loosely secure mushrooms using rubber bands and allow the frags to naturally attach once bound. This method is efficient and safe if done correctly. However, binding mushroom frags with rubber bands should be performed carefully to avoid cutting into the tissue with tight pressure.
Mushrooms can be glued to substrates like frag plugs with careful technique and patience. Their flesh naturally produces mucus that can make it difficult to allow the glue to properly set to their tissue, so patience and technique are important.
Hold the plug level during glue application, apply a small pea-sized bead of reef-safe glue on the mounting surface, and gently place and press the frag onto the glue bead. Keep the frag plug upright for at least 30 seconds while submerged in aquarium water to accelerate the glue’s curing process.
We’ve found that allowing mushrooms to naturally attach to small pieces of rubble in an acclimation box is one of the easiest propagation methods .
Our Method:
Place an organized layer of frag plugs or frag rock discs with high surface texture on the bottom of an acclimation box.
After you have finished fragging your mushroom colony, gently place the polyp fragments into the acclimation box so they can settle atop the layer of frag substrates.
Some frags may need to be replaced on the tops of the substrates if they have fallen between the plugs or discs. Aquarium tweezers or tongs work well for this if needed.
Allow the frags to attach naturally to the substrate layer for 5 to 20 days. The time for secure attachment is highly dependent on the type of substrate used.
Place the new mushroom frags where you intend to grow them out.

While it is possible, many hobbyists prefer allowing mushrooms to attach naturally before using glue. Freshly cut mushrooms often produce mucus that prevents cyanoacrylate glue from bonding effectively.
Waiting a few days usually produces much stronger attachment, so many hobbyists prefer to encourage natural attachment as much as possible without the use of adhesives.

Fresh mushroom frags generally recover best under moderate-to-low lighting. In general, freshly fragged corals recover better with lighting that is slightly lower intensity than the coral prefers as a healthy colony. Since mushroom corals often prefer moderate lighting, low-to-moderate lighting is often best during the initial recovery phase. As recovery progresses the lights can be gradually increased in intensity.
Avoid placing freshly cut mushrooms directly under your highest PAR zones. Likewise, extremely strong flow can repeatedly lift fresh frags before they have attached. Moderate indirect flow encourages oxygen exchange while allowing the coral to remain stable.
Mushroom corals receive much of their energy from photosynthesis through their zooxanthellae. In fact, most healthy mushrooms recover without direct feeding, although some exhibit heterotrophic eating habits if coral foods are introduced. Once fully healed, occasional feeding with fine frozen foods or reef foods may encourage faster growth in some species. Avoid aggressively target feeding freshly cut mushrooms until they have sealed and resumed normal expansion.
