Our premium frag plugs rely on strong mold geometry that can be replicated consistently while also preserving the look of the reef. But it's not just the tools we've developed that set our plugs apart, it's the way we craft each piece from start to finish that makes our product truly superior.
We start coral frag plug production with high-grade ingredients natural to reef ecosystems, including aragonite and crushed coral, and mix them dry with a strong binding agent. Our recipe leans heavily on the natural elements that favor coral encrustation, which we stir until blended homogenously.
Once mixed well dry, we slowly hydrate the mixture with water until moist but not running or pooling anywhere. Once the mixture is properly hydrated, we pour portions into all of the stems of the molds we're currently using. We then add a second dose of calcium-based dry materials to the current mix to increase the porosity and reduce moisture content. With the updated mixture, we finished pouring the plugs, then press a dimple into the top of each disc.
We then cure our plugs in curing chambers for 72 hours. During this curing period, humidity is elevated to reinforce the bonding process of the mixture. This process helps reduce chalkiness during the following stages, and improves the overall structural integrity of the plugs.
The soak is undoubtedly the most critical stage for ensuring the plugs are safe for all of the organisms in your reef ecosystem. During this stage, we use water purified in a 4-step reverse osmosis deionization (RODI) system. This stage prevents the plugs from leeching into live systems, potentially causing parameter spikes in alkalinity or pH.
Just because we know our system doesn't mean we simply accept averages. Every single batch of Reef PlugsTM by Artisan Frag Plugs is chemically tested in 72-hour sessions to ensure their impact on purified water is negligible. If the first 72-hour test comes back with anything other than negligible dKH readings, we start another 72-hour soak. It's that simple because it's that important.
With countless choices available today, choosing the right frag plug for your coral can be a daunting task. It feels like every option offers advantages in one category while sacrificing strengths in another. Whether it's the rate of encrustation, the consistency of stem breaks, or the simple look of it in your aquarium, they each have drawbacks.
But not anymore—introducing Reef PlugsTM by Artisan Frag Plugs, the first calcium-based frag plugs designed for healthy coral growth, a natural appearance, and easy tray-to-display transfer. Every step from initial attachment to final placement is simple, consistent, and designed around your coral's happiness.
