At Artisan Frag Plugs, every Reef Plug starts with a simple goal: create a frag substrate that supports healthy coral growth while looking like it actually belongs in a reef aquarium.
Many frag plugs are manufactured with efficiency as the primary objective. We approached the problem from a reefer's perspective instead. We wanted a substrate that promotes coral encrustation, transfers cleanly from frag racks to display tanks, and blends naturally into reef rock once placed in the aquarium.
Creating that balance required extensive prototyping, testing, and refinement. The result is a production process that combines natural reef-inspired materials, careful quality control, and hands-on craftsmanship.
Our premium frag plugs rely on specialized mold geometry that can be replicated consistently while still preserving the natural appearance of reef rock.
The tools we've developed play an important role, but what truly sets our plugs apart is the care invested into every stage of production. From raw materials to final testing, each batch is produced using the same process we trust in our own reef systems.
Every batch of coral frag production begins with high-quality ingredients commonly found in natural reef environments.
We start by combining aragonite, crushed coral, and other calcium-based materials with a carefully selected binding agent. These dry ingredients are blended thoroughly to ensure consistency throughout the entire batch.
Our formula intentionally emphasizes reef-derived materials because we believe coral should be attached to substrates that more closely resemble what it encounters in nature for optimal coral encrustation.
After the dry ingredients have been mixed, purified water is added gradually until the material reaches the proper consistency.
The initial mixture is carefully packed into the stem sections of our molds to maximize structural strength. Additional dry material is then incorporated into the remaining mixture to increase surface texture and porosity throughout the disc.
Once poured, each plug receives its final shaping by hand, including the signature recessed dimple designed to help secure coral frags during placement and attachment.
Freshly poured plugs are transferred into controlled curing chambers for a minimum of 72 hours.
During curing, humidity levels are carefully maintained to strengthen the bonding process within the material. This stage significantly improves durability while reducing the chalky surface texture often associated with newly cast reef products.
Proper curing creates a stronger, more stable frag plug before it ever reaches the next stage of production.
The soaking stage is one of the most important parts of the entire process.
All Reef Plugs are soaked using water produced by our four-stage reverse osmosis deionization (RODI) filtration system. This helps remove residual compounds and prepares the plugs for safe use in marine aquariums.
A properly soaked plug is far less likely to contribute unwanted changes to aquarium parameters such as alkalinity or pH.
Because reef stability matters, we never rush this stage.
Every substrate batch produced by Artisan Frag Plugs undergoes water testing before being approved for sale.
Rather than relying on assumptions or production averages, we evaluate each batch through dedicated soaking and testing cycles. We monitor water chemistry throughout the process to verify that the plugs have reached our standards. If a batch does not meet those standards, it continues through additional soaking and testing until it does.
It's a simple philosophy: if we wouldn't place it in our own reef tanks, we won't ship it to yours.
Every Reef Plug we produce is used and evaluated in our own systems.
We continuously observe how corals attach, encrust, and grow on our substrates because real-world reef performance matters more than marketing claims. The lessons learned from our own aquariums help shape future improvements and ensure every batch meets the standards we've set for ourselves.
Our goal has never been to make just another frag plug.
Our goal is to create a substrate that looks natural, performs consistently, and helps hobbyists build more beautiful reef aquariums.
Choosing a frag plug shouldn't require sacrificing appearance for performance.
Reef Plugs combine reef-inspired materials, natural aesthetics, reliable stem breaks, and tray-to-display convenience in a single substrate designed around the needs of both corals and reef keepers. Reef plugs are the first aragonite-based frag plugs designed for healthy coral growth & propagation without sacrificing the look of the reef.
